In present age of economic turbulence, Indian foundries are striving hard to achieve overall operational excellence to remain competitive. To cope up with the emerging future challenges, aDefects Reductiona leading to less scrap seems to be the most promising and viable strategy to achieve higher productivity in foundries. This can be remarkably tackled by inculcating Six Sigmaas DMAIC approach in the given production environments as Six Sigma is evolving into a powerful business improvement strategy and its importance is growing every day. For achieving and sustaining operational excellence, Six Sigma enables companies to use simple but powerful statistical methods to define, measure, analyse, improve and control processes Doing things rightly and keeping them consistent is the basic fundamental idea behind Six Sigma. The literature review suggests that in India, except in some multinational companies, the application of Six Sigma has been highly inconsistent in manufacturing sector and is almost non-existent in the foundry sector which is facing serious sickness levels. Literature also reports tremendous financial gains and productivity improvement through Six Sigma in large manufacturing sector, so an attempt can be made to replicate it in foundry SME sector too. Keeping this in mind, this book was planned to explore the synergy of Six Sigma and foundry industry. Through a case study in a non ferrous medium scale foundry, the present work formulates a comprehensive strategy for the successful implementation of Six Sigma in Indian foundry industry without ignoring its existing constraints. Using a project based approach; standard step by step methodology has been formulated to execute different phases of DMAIC. Selecting right tools/techniques in various DMAIC phases has always been a critical parameter for overall success of the Six Sigma project in the presence of some real constraints/difficulties.
