In the authors' first book Structural Concrete: Finite Element Analysis for Limit-State Design, a method based on formal finite-element modelling of structural concrete with realistic material properties was described. In this text, a simplified method is presented which needs calculations which are no more complex calculations that those required by the current (late-1990s) codes. It involves identifying the regions of a structural member or structure through which the external load is transmitted from its point of application to the supports and then strengthening these regions as required.
