RecQ from the human pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae was identified by genetic screening to be critical to this bacterium's ability to undergo antigenic variation. To determine the necessity of N. gonorrhoeae RecQ's multiple HRDC domains, the Dillard Laboratory and I introduced variants lacking these domains into N. gonorrhoeae and tested for pilin variation and UV resistance. We discovered a necessity for the presence of HRDC domain #2 in RecQ and also showed that one protein variant is defective for binding and unwinding particular DNA substrates.
