This study evaluated changes in attitude toward parenting, knowledge of child development, knowledge of independent living skills, and adaptive functioning, among a group of pregnant and parenting adolescent females diagnosed with mental disorders who were treated in a residential facility. The study was designed to address the scarcity of empirical information available on interventions used to treat pregnant and parenting adolescents diagnosed with mental illness. Also examined was the relationship between participants' adaptive functioning level at treatment admission, and their successful completion of the program. Archival data of 119 pregnant and parenting adolescent females diagnosed with mental disorders, ages 13-19 years old, treated in a residential program between 1997 and 2003 were reviewed. A pretest-posttest design was used to measure changes in participants' knowledge and adaptive functioning, as measured by the Adult Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI), the Parent Knowledge Test (PKT), the Independent Living Assessment for Life Skills (ILALS), and the Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF). A between-participants design was used to evaluate differences in the adaptive functioning of program completers and noncompleters. The findings indicated that participants' knowledge and adaptive functioning increased from pretest to posttest. The findings also showed that the adaptive functioning of program completers were higher at discharge than noncompleters. The implications for social change from this study include increased awareness of the prevalence of mental illness among pregnant and parenting adolescents, and the potential impact of providing effective interventions, which can potentially reduce short and long-term consequences to adolescents, their offspring, and society.Retrieved January 25, 2000, from www.gao.gov/archive/1999/he99004.pdf U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
