With the support of the National Science Foundation, the University of Wyoming and two associated community colleges are assessing the learning levels of their students in the Engineering Science courses through a multi-disciplinary capstone assessment project in each course. The problems are linked together using real-life situations based on wind mills and wind turbines. The objectives of this research involved the development of the learning objectives, the assessment rubrics, the problems, rules for assessment, the assessment process, and the assessment of the data from consecutive semesters. A set of learning objectives was developed for each Engineering Science course. Initially, one set of problems was developed and they are based on a 1.8 kW residential wind turbine. Two assessment rubrics were also created, a general rubric for all of the problems and a specific rubric for each Engineering Science course. A set of guidelines for the assessment process as well as the assessment process were created as well.
