The present study was conducted in order to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Beck Depression Inventory - II (BDI-II) utilizing the Rasch measurement model. The sample consisted of 130 subjects recruited by doctoral students in a statistics course in clinical psychology. Thirty-six percent of the total sample was male ranging in age from 18 to 69 and 46% female ranging in age from 19 to 71. Most subjects were single although more female subjects reported to be married. Finally, most subjects reported completing college or beyond. Infit analysis conducted by Rasch analysis determined that all items fit the construct of depression and therefore are a good qfitq for the test. Outfit analysis identified that item 21 qloss of interest in sexq, functions in an unexpected way on the test, raising questions as to the meaning of a client's response to this item. Item analysis identified item 15 qloss of energyq as the most frequently endorsed item, and item 9 qsuicidal thoughtsq as the least frequently endorsed. This study suggests that the BDI-11 should be used with equal confidence for adults regardless of age, education, gander or marital status. While interpreting the test data item 9 should be looked at FIRST. If endorsed at any level other than zero, further assessment of risk should be conducted. Item 9 is probably best treated as a single-item test of depression. If item 9 is not endorsed, the test could probably he scored dichotomously. Item 21, qsexual dysfunctionq should be queried when endorsed, as it does not function as expected on the BDI-II.
