Little is known about measurement of temporal artery temperature compared to measurement of core esophageal temperature in the adult subjects undergoing surgical procedures. A primary objective of this practicum was to collect additional evidence to validate the accuracy of the temporal artery thermometer for body temperature measurement. An infrared temporal artery thermometer, which is a hand held temperature measuring device, called the Exergen Temporal Scanner, was used to measure the temporal temperatures while Vital temp esophageal temperature probe was used to measure core temperatures in subjects in operation rooms. This ongoing pilot study hopes to find temporal (scanning) temperature monitoring as an accurate and useful method for body temperature measurement.
