Since the quality of science textbooks has significant impact on teaching and learning science, the importance of textbook analysis has been emphasized by various educational experts. International organizations such as UNESCO formulated a comprehensive strategy and guidelines on textbook research and the AAASa€™s Project 2061 developed analysis protocols to evaluate the instructional effectiveness of science textbooks. When analyzing science textbooks, researchers look into the balance between theoretical and practical knowledge, portrayal of minorities, women and gender fairness, treatment of socio-scientific and controversial issues, inclusion of the nature of science and historical accounts, depiction of graphical information, vocabulary load, comprehensibility and readability at the intended level, accuracy and coherence, dealing with misconceptions, and cultural and religious sensibility. A number of analytical tools have been constructed in recent years in the form of survey questionnaires, rubrics, grids, criteria, rating schemse and procedures using ethnographic content and reflexive document analyses, coding of the indicators, and image analysis protocols. A growing number of research articles on textbooks analysis can be found in the science education literature. Nevertheless, educators agree that far more research should be conducted to provide the educational community with better information about the quality of the textbook contents. This book attempts to consolidate research findings and informs current approaches in the scientific analysis of textbooks from multiple perspectives. The chapters in this book will explore theoretical and philosophical underpinnings, methodological issues, critical analysis and conceptual frameworks and tools for evaluation of textbooks.
