Choice for All?: Contradictions in Charter School Policies and Practices

My research focus addresses the tension between ongoing inequities in public education along axes of race, class and gender, and current education reform efforts that seek to counteract these imbalances, with a key emphasis on privatized public education reform. While public schooling in the U.S. has marginalized people of color, and continues to reproduce class and racial stratification, historical and current movements also attempt to make schools into more open, democratic institutions. Thus, my analysis explores the possibilities and constraints of current education reform efforts to improve the quality and accessibility of public education for all students. Consequently, I conduct intensive ethnographic analysis of a charter school that emphasizes academic achievement and social justice (the Charter School of Achievement and Social Justice, or ASJ) in order to explore the potential for public schools to cultivate more egalitarian and critical education while challenging economic, political and social limitations that perpetuate inequalities. Situating my research within the context of reproduction and resistance theories helps to conceptualize the lived realities of individual and collective actors as they engage in various political, economic and cultural movements.
