Because statistics from national studies document the pandemic problem of cheating that occurs in the nation's high schools and colleges, because academic dishonesty threatens the validity of instruction and assessment in schools and the validity of a diploma or degree, educators need to seek the root causes of academic dishonesty and to develop and implement possible cures. Participants in both high school and college responded to one of four instruments: a survey, an essay written in response to a prompt, an interview, or a focus group. Every participant, except the essay writers, responded to a 5 by 7 inch index card that sought freestyle responses in answer to the question, qWhat Is Cheating?q The study sought answers and solutions from the source, the students themselves, to document their cheating behaviors, false excuse-making, and plagiarism for the purpose of soliciting their motivations, their aspirations, attitudes, and problem-solving creativity.In addition to the quantitative survey, the qualitative focus groups and interviews, the in-class essay also has provided insight ... high school seniors/college sophomores in English classes that teach argumentation and persuasion writing skills.
