Ultrasound is an established technique for studying cardiac structure and function. Tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE) is a new method with potential advantages in the real-time assessment of myocardial contractility. Tissue velocity is measured by pulsed Doppler and displayed in color-coded fashion. As a consequence, a new window to detect wall motion abnormalities has been opened.
