This dissertation explored Human Resource executives' (HREs) perceptions of business competencies, focusing on self-marketing, and how they create value. This research implemented a qualitative research design and an exploratory method. Since this study was a work to ascertain qwhat isq no hypotheses were offered. The research population was HREs', director level and above, of mid and large-sized firms with revenues at least $50 million in the manufacturing and service sectors. The research revealed a perceived strong link between business knowledge competency and success in the twenty-first century for HREs. The participants also agreed that a qcustomer and market focusq and financial skills were essential business competencies. The participants ranked the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) leadership competency as most important for HREs. A customer, including employee as an internal client, and market focus was perceived to be the second most important MBNQA business competency for HREs. This study found that self-marketing Human Resources creates organizational value. Additionally, all participants stated that their Human Resource Department implemented and utilized a customer, that is, an employee, orientation. The study revealed that HREs perceive that business competencies and self-marketing are important tools to facilitate the realization of human resource strategic, business value creation.
